The Claim and Our Verdict

  • The claim: A video was shared Dec. 31, 2021, on Facebook, along with a claim that China announced the change of China Rare Earth Group’s registered address to Xinjiang province.
  • Fact-checking:
    • The video published in the Facebook post doesn’t mention any official announcements on China Rare Earth Group’s address change. However, the video claims some netizens suggested the state-owned company should change its registered address to Xinjiang province.
    • According to the records in the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System and Qichacha, a business database that delivers data and analytics on China-based private and public companies, the registered address of China Rare Earth Group is Jiangxi province in eastern China, rather than Xinjiang province.
    • Keyword searches on the Chinese government’s official website and the websites of some China-based media outlets, such as Xinhua News Agency and People’s Daily, did not produce any information related a change of registered address for China Rare Earth Group.
  • Our ruling: We rate the claim as FALSE.

News Brief

A video shared Dec. 31, 2021, on Facebook, along with a claim that China announced the change of China Rare Earth Group’s registered address to Xinjiang province. Similar information and videos can also be found on YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

As of the issuance of this report, the post had been shared 7 times, and had received 41 likes or reactions.

Fact-checking

The video presented in the claim was cited from Qiqu Video, an online content farm. The video’s source can be traced to a YouTube video published Dec. 25, 2021. At the 3:14 mark, the Chinese-language voiceover translates as, “Some netizens suggested that China Rare Earth Group should change its registered address to Xinjiang, China.” The rest of the video covers nothing relevant to the purported address change. Therefore, according to the video, the state-owned company’s registered address change is just a suggestion from netizens rather than an official announcement.

According to a record of the state-owned company on the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System, China Rare Earth Group Co. Ltd was established Dec. 22, 2021, with an address registered in Jiangxi province in eastern China. A search on Qichacha, a business database that delivers data and analytics on China-based private and public companies, produced the same result.
